Reflecting its commitment to enhance its presence in the neurosurgical market, the precision metrology and inspection equipment manufacturer Renishaw plc has recently acquired a 75% stake in the Swiss company Schaerer Mayfield NeuroMate AG and its wholly owned French subsidiary Schaerer Mayfield NeuroMate SARL. Schaerer Mayfield is a leading manufacturer of surgical robots for neurosurgery.

The deal was completed on 20 November.

The NeuroMate® image-guided surgical robot has been developed and manufactured by an expert team with members in the USA and France. Carrying the CE mark and approval from US FDA, the robot has been used in more than 9,000 neurosurgical procedures, including deep-brain stimulation, motor cortex stimulation stereo electroencephalography, neuroendoscopy, radiosurgery, biopsy, and transcranial magnetic stimulation.

The growth of precision-guided neurosurgery is set to drive further growth in the robot-assisted surgery market. As demands for increased accuracy, safety, and efficiency continue and clinical needs go on multiplying, the prospect of expanding the success of NeuroMate beyond France to other markets represents a great opportunity.

Renishaw believes that its existing neurological portfolio and plans for investment in its stereotactic product range, combined with its commitment to this new technology, will enable it to shape this significant market opportunity and meanwhile provide neurosurgeons with improved clinical outcomes and overall efficiency.

Renishaw is already involved in cutting-edge drug-delivery and neurosurgical planning enhancement technologies. The acquisition of Schaerer Mayfield NeuroMate and its robotic expertise will provide a platform technology for these activities, advance the use of functional neurosurgical procedures, and reduce clinical complication rates in existing stereotactic procedures, using the only CE- and FDA-approved neurosurgical robot presently available.

Sir David McMurtry, Renishaw’s chairman and chief executive, pronounced the investment an important step for Renishaw, Schaerer Mayfield NeuroMate, and surgical robotics generally.

“The combination of the preeminent stereotactic robot with the portfolio of neurological products that Renishaw is developing based on its precision engineering capabilities will provide the neurosurgeon with the tools necessary for precise placement of current and next-generation therapeutic-delivery devices,” he said.
