Heinz-Dieter Schunk, managing partner of Schunk GmbH & Co. KG, the clamping and gripping technology specialist based in Lauffen am Neckar, was awarded the German Machine Construction Prize on October 14 during the Third German Machine Construction Summit in Berlin. Under Schunk’s management, a small garage business was transformed into one with 1,800 employees and a reputation as an innovation hotbed for clamping technology and automation.

Every two years, top decision makers from the German machine and production facility construction industry come together in Berlin for the machine-building summit. The awarding of the Machine Construction Prize is a highlight of the meeting.

Heinz-Dieter Schunk is the third winner of the award, which is presented by the business newspaper Produktion. In choosing him, an independent jury of experts from the fields of economics and science recognized the Swabian businessman’s life achievements.

Schunk follows Prof. Dr.-Ing. E.H. Berthold Leibinger of the machine tool builder Trumpf and Dr. Dipl.-Ing. Dieter Kress from the tool specialist Mapal Dr. Kress, in winning the prize. His predecessors were both honored in 2006.

Heinz-Dieter Schunk began working at his father Friedrich Schunk’s company in 1964, when he was 22 years old. He has been responsible for systematically expanding the firm ever since that decade.

The award-winning executive attributes his business success to the motto “Leaders in quality and service can afford to demand higher prices.” An emphasis on maintaining very high technological quality justifies products with higher prices than those of competitors, Schunk says, because the toolholding and automation devices pay for themselves quickly.

Other expressions of Heinz-Dieter Schunk’s business philosophy are his investment in training within the company—generally, about 12% of the company’s workforce is made up of trainees at any time—and his staunch support of Germany as a production location. He is now a member of the main executive committee of the German Engineering Federation, VDMA; the economic advisory committee of the Baden-Württemberg department of trade and industry; the innovation advisory committee for the federal state of Baden-Württemberg; and the board of trustees of Beschützende Werkstätte Heilbronn (Sheltered Workshops Heilbronn).
