“During the first seven months of 2009, sales of EMO-relevant precision tools decreased by almost 40% compared with the same period last year,” said Lothar Horn, newly elected chairman of the VDMA, the German Precision Tools Association, at the press lunch in Milan as EMO Milano 2009 opened last week. “But we hope for an economic recovery in 2010.”
EMO Milano, which ended this past weekend, was the most important fair for the German precision tool manufacturing industry this year. Thus, about 100 of the 450 tool manufacturers exhibiting at the Italian edition of the trade show were well-known German companies. These constituted the largest group of foreign exhibitors at EMO. Also, for the first time, the VDMA took part in a foreign fair by staffing its own information desk.
Precision tools are used on machine tools in all sector involving metalworking, including the automobile, aircraft and electrical industries. At EMO Milan, the main product groups on display were cutting tools, work- and toolholding devices, jigs and fixtures, and dimensional measuring equipment. Employing more than 70,000 people, the precision tools industry in Germany is one of the largest sectors of that nation’s mechanical engineering industry.
