The PET preform mold facility at the campus of Husky Injection Molding Systems Ltd. in Bolton, Ontario, Canada, is undergoing a major upgrade to increase capacity and reduce lead times. Scheduled for completion by the autumn of 2003, the project will add new machining centers that are designed for the production of preform mold components.
"The increased capacity will allow us to produce significantly more preform mold stacks per week compared to this time last year," says Mike Urquhart, vice president of Husky's PET business. "We've seen higher demand than last year, and our existing manufacturing capacity was making it tough to continue to meet the needs of our customers."
Husky expects that this US$30-million undertaking will improve its ability to offer the most competitive lead times on molds, conversions, and refurbishments. Tbe upgraded facility will also include manufacturing areas dedicated to low-volume production runs of mold components.
The facility's built-in flexibility, through specialized work cells and automation, will enable Husky to manage peak demands in the future with little or no impact on standard lead times.
Husky is also expanding its hot runner manufacturing facility in Milton, Vermont, which provides hot runners for Husky molds.
