At an EMO show press briefing in September, J. Patrick Ervin, president and CEO of Hardinge Inc., presented an overview of the roadmap the company is following as a global company with a commitment to developing market-leading technologies. The machine tool manufacturer, founded more than 100 years ago and still headquartered in Elmira, New York, USA, is finding Europe an increasingly important area of operation that offers a wealth of partnerships and opportunities, according to the executive.
More than half of Hardinge’s sales today are outside the United States, with Europe being the fastest-growing market. The Hardinge brand continues to be the one that market leaders worldwide turn to for quality, innovation, and performance, noted Ervin with justifiable pride.
Pat Ervin joined Hardinge in 1978 as a customer instructor, training customers in programming and operating Hardinge machines. He went on to various positions in sales, marketing, engineering, and manufacturing areas before becoming president and CEO in 2001 and chairman at the beginning of 2003. Throughout his career he has been involved in new product development and has focused on the application of new technology in Hardinge products.
Globally, demand for machine tools continues to increase. Hardinge has invested heavily in technology and infrastructure that will enable the company to take advantage of this growth in its core competencies of turning, milling, grinding, and work holding. The acquisition of Bridgeport and an emphasis on technological innovation, such as an emphasis on hydrostatic technology and hard turning, have been central to its corporate global strategy.
Hardinge has a strong replacement-parts business as well, and also provides consulting and turnkey solutions. Consequently, customers worldwide can access advanced technology solutions and applications and technical know-how from a single source.
